Let’s face it. You like sports cars because they go fast. Very fast. But the one problem with going fast is that there is increased risk and danger.

That’s why when buying a sports car many women consider a car’s safety features. Here is a list of safety features to ask about when choosing your sports car:

What features does the car have to prevent accidents?

More and more cars are being built with technologies that are especially developed to prevent accidents, or reduce the damage done.

One of these technologies is Electronic Stability Control. (ESC) works by detecting when a car is out of control and preventing skids. The computer is programmed to help the driver regain control by automatically braking certain wheels. Sometimes ESC will also reduce engine power until control is regained.

ESC has been hailed as one of the best new technologies in advancing car safety. It is very effective and can help avoid or reduce the severity of crashes, hence saving lives.

More and more countries and states are making ESC systems imperative.

Inquire your car insurance vendor about reduced insurance premiums for cars equipped with ESC.

How are the brakes?

Does the car have an anti-lock braking (ABS) system? ABS increases safety by preventing the wheels from locking while braking, and thus help the driver keep control of steering. They are very successful at reducing the risk of multiple vehicle crashes, risk of run-off-road crashes because when a wheel is sliding, it can’t be steered.

You might want to test how this feature works so that you will be acquainted with how it feels. When it kicks in there will be a lot of noise and the brake pedal will vibrate. Try it out in a vacant lot and slam on the brakes, or attend a defensive driving class to learn about it.

Does it have reliable suspension?

Are the grips responsive?

Your suspension system becomes very important when driving a sports car because when cars go faster, the bumps get higher, and this can reduce tire friction making it easier for you to lose control of your car.

Suspension systems smooth out the car ride by keeping your tires firmly rooted to the road, thereby reducing danger.

How is the Traction Handling?

Traction handling helps cars maintain their grip and stability on the road. In the event of wheel spin, this safety feature will kick in to slow down the spinning wheel to help regain traction, and is very helpful on slippery surfaces.

Head restraints

These are created to prevent the occupants’ heads from snapping back during a collision. They should be adjustable depending on the passenger’s height.

Air Bags

Airbags have become standard safety features. Passenger sensing air bag systems will automatically switch the passenger side air bag on or off depending on the passenger’s weight. This is important for smaller passengers who can receive injuries from air bags.

Also look for side-impact airbags, as these impacts are often the worst caused by head on collisions. Head curtain airbags or side curtain airbags are designed to protect the heads of the occupants.

Good tires

Yes, good tires in good shape are important. Don’t forget to check your tire pressure once a month and to get your wheels aligned.
