Whiplash Injury More Common For Women
Whiplash Injury is more common for women. Women are 3 times more likely to suffer whiplash injury than men according to a study conducted at Umea University in Sweden. That leads to more whiplash injury claims from women.
Researchers led by academic Bertil Jonnson found that women were more at risk of whiplash injuries if hit from behind and that this was due to their seating position. The rear end shunt type accidents were more apt to cause neck injuries in women.
The research team used data from 400 whiplash injury claims in Sweden as well as video recordings of Swedish drivers taken from roadside cameras. When testing using crash test dummies they found that the rear end shunt type accidents were more apt to cause neck injuries in women, and that this was due to the way that women adjust their seats when getting into a car. The study found that women tended to sit higher and closer towards the steering wheel, and they moved the backrest into a more vertical position than male drivers did. This left them more open to neck injuries in rear end collisions. The driver’s position was also found to have twice the accident rate compared to the front passenger seat.
Drivers are encouraged to ensure that they properly adjust the head restraint and backrest whenever they enter a car, and make the necessary adjustments, especially for the driver. This can reduce your chance of whiplash injury.
Meanwhile Bertil Jonnson is calling for a new test dummy to be designed to better replicate an average-sized woman.
Hopefully that will reduce whiplash injury in women.
